In the heat of summer, it's not a bad idea just to throw on a swimsuit and spend a day in the pool and on water rides. At Water Country USA, two hours from Washington, D.C. in Williamsburg, VA, you can find a whole lot of both.

Hours: The park operates from mid-May through Labor Day, and always opens at 10 a.m. In May and early June it closes at either 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. From mid-June through mid-August it stays open until 8 p.m., and from then until the end of the season closing time varies from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Check www.watercountryusa.com before you go.

Admission: $41.95 for adults and children over 10, $34.95 for children between 3 and 9, children 2 and under free.

Parking: $12

Metrorail: Not accessible by Metro. Drive south on I-95 to Richmond, then take I-295 south to I-64, and follow I-64 east to Exit 242B.

There are eight different major rides of all kinds for adults. You can get wet and scream in a four-person raft on Big Daddy Falls or Aquazoid; a three-person inner tube on Meltdown; a two-person tube on Wild Thang or Malibu Pipeline; a solo tube on Jet Scream; a toboggan on Rampage; or a racing mat on Nitro Racer. There are tons of body surfing water slides too, plus a giant wave pool.

There are also tamer slides for younger kids (or parents carrying younger kids), along with a host of other wet attractions like water playgrounds and the slow-moving Lazy River. And make sure to check out the acrobatic dive show five times a day.
