Special Evening Tour with Martha Washington
June 3, 2017 — 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Discover the extraordinary life of Martha Washington while strolling through the grounds of Mount Vernon in the early evening after the estate is closed. Explore outbuildings that represent various functions of the estate that were overseen by Mrs. Washington, such as spinning, gardening, and food preservation. Look across the bowling green to the west gate and imagine how Martha Washington, as a young bride with her two children, must have felt when they entered the property and saw their new home for the first time. Cost is $28 per person.
Inside the Mansion, discover the many roles and responsibilities of Martha Washington throughout her event-filled life – gracious hostess, devoted mother and grandmother, and loving wife and companion to General Washington for almost 41 years. Each room reveals stories of joy, tragedy, and love, which were all part of the Washingtons’ life here at their cherished home.
After exiting the kitchen, where Mrs. Washington spent a good deal of every day that she was on the estate, stroll to the beautiful upper garden and greet Lady Washington while enjoying refreshments and live music.
