On Dec. 12, 2015, the Newseum will host its 17th annual “Yes, Virginia” Family Day, an event to spark holiday magic and bring out the kid in everyone. The day is inspired by Francis P. Church’s 1897 New York Sun editorial, which addressed 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon’s question, “Is there a Santa Claus?”
In a tribute to the Sun’s famous proclamation, “Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus,” the Newseum will celebrate the magic of the season with festivities throughout this enchanting day.
Experience the wonder with the Newseum’s exclusive reading of the heart-warming letter which inspired history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial. Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier will be joined by Virginia O’Hanlon’s 8-year-old great-great-granddaughter, Mehren O’Hanlon Blair, for the special rendition.
Enjoy a magical appearance by the One-and-Only Macy’s Santa Claus as he spreads holiday cheer through a memorable reading of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” and poses for photos.
Activities will include holiday crafts, train rides, cookie decorating, screenings of the animated film “Yes, Virginia,” music by the Figgy Puddings Holiday Carolers from the Washington National Opera, a special “Be a TV Reporter” experience from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® and more!
Youth 18 and younger will receive FREE ADMISSION to the Newseum during this day if they bring a letter for Santa to put in the Macy’s Santa Mail letterbox. Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish® for every letter collected.
